Cancer Care

I was told I have a liver tumor. Where does IR fit?

Interventional radiology can treat selected primary or metastatic liver tumors with arterial therapies or image-guided ablation as part of a multidisciplinary cancer plan.

The tumor type and the whole cancer plan matter.

Primary liver tumors

Hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma may involve liver-directed treatments depending on stage and liver function.

Metastatic disease

Some cancers that spread to the liver may also be considered for liver-directed treatment in selected settings.

Interventional oncology is collaborative. Medical oncology, surgery, radiation oncology and hepatology may all influence the treatment plan.
