Fibroids can affect more than the uterus.

Heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure and anemia deserve a clear explanation of the full treatment spectrum.

Fibroids 101

Bleeding and bulk symptoms tell different stories.

Fibroids are benign uterine tumors. Some mainly cause heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia; others create pelvic pressure, bloating, pain, urinary frequency, or constipation because of their size and location.

Bleeding symptoms

  • Heavy periods
  • Clots
  • Anemia / fatigue

Bulk symptoms

  • Pelvic pressure
  • Frequent urination
  • Bloating
  • Pain

UFE is one uterus-preserving option.

Observation / medication

May be reasonable for mild symptoms or when symptom control is enough.

Myomectomy

Surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus.

UFE

Catheter treatment that blocks the fibroid blood supply so fibroids shrink over time.

Hysterectomy

Definitive surgery that removes the uterus.

Pregnancy goals matter: future fertility and fibroid location should be discussed with gynecology and interventional radiology.
