Knee Pain 101

Knee pain should be diagnosed before it is embolized.

Genicular artery embolization is used for selected patients with painful knee osteoarthritis. It does not treat every cause of knee pain, so diagnosis, imaging and prior conservative care matter.

Mechanical

Cartilage loss, meniscus disease, alignment and instability often hurt with loading and movement.

Inflammatory

Synovitis and abnormal periarticular vascularity can contribute to osteoarthritis pain.

Referred / nerve

Hip or spine disease may be felt near the knee.

Other causes

Crystal arthritis, infection, fracture and tendon problems follow different pathways.

Exercise / PT

Foundational treatment for strength, mobility and function.

Medication / injections

Can reduce symptoms depending on the case and medical risks.

GAE

Catheter treatment intended to reduce abnormal inflammatory blood flow around the painful knee in selected patients.

Knee replacement

Addresses advanced structural disease when arthroplasty is indicated.
