Portal Hypertension

What is a TIPS procedure?

TIPS creates a channel through the liver that connects the portal and hepatic venous systems to reduce portal pressure in selected patients.

TIPS changes portal blood flow.

Why it is considered

Refractory ascites or recurrent variceal bleeding are among the situations where TIPS may be considered.

What it does

A stent creates a pathway through the liver to lower portal venous pressure.

What must be considered

Liver function, heart function, encephalopathy risk and transplant planning may affect the decision.

Who should be involved

Hepatology/GI and interventional radiology typically make this decision together.
